Retirement living proves best decision for TriCare James Ommaney’s oldest resident

At 99 years young, Lila Barrett lives a very independent lifestyle at her retirement community, TriCare James Ommaney.

“I still cook for myself but do have dinner in the dining room most nights, and allow myself the luxury of a cleaner!” said Mrs Barrett.

Prior to moving to TriCare James Ommaney 13 years ago, Mrs Barrett lived on the NSW Central Coast for 25 years. The move was driven by a desire to live closer to her daughter in Indooroopilly.

She thought long and hard about it first, knowing that retirement living is not for everyone.

“I like the homeliness here; it’s very friendly and the staff feel like family – they always have a smile on their face.

The climate is much better too. I live a different life to before, but still a very happy life,” said Mrs Barrett.

An avid Bridge player, when she first moved to TriCare James Ommaney Mrs Barrett played twice a week, as well as knitting for Red Cross and taking part in a range of social activities.

“Now I’m a little older I still play Bridge with some of the ladies, but not as regularly.

If you want some quiet time it’s ok not to be involved. However, if you are lonely, you only need walk out your door and there is always someone to talk to,” said Mrs Barrett.

Village Manager, Steven Pashley says that residents have convenient shopping and a selection of eateries to choose from all easily accessed by public transport just around the corner.

“Part of the appeal of retirement living is the ease of living and having everything on your doorstep,” said Mr Pashley.

13 years on and Mrs Barrett is still very happy with her decision.

“Our close knit community is like a small family, I’d recommend TriCare James Ommaney to anyone considering retirement living,” said Mrs Barrett.
