Meet Ann & Jerry – an unwavering partnership

At TriCare’s Ashgrove Aged Care Residence, every resident has a story. And for Ann and Jerry, theirs is one built on love, creativity, community and unwavering partnership. After more than six decades together, their journey into residential aged care became not an ending, but a new chapter filled with connection, compassion and peace of mind.

Ann and Jerry have shared a remarkable life together. Ann, a former schoolteacher, artist and silversmith, spent many years nurturing both her family and her creative passions. Living amongst the rainforest surrounds of Mount Glorious, the couple built a life centred on welcoming people into their home, sharing stories, and building meaningful friendships. Jerry enjoyed a long career across television, radio and newspapers, and together they raised a close-knit family filled with creativity, conversation and community spirit.

When Jerry’s care needs increased, Ann devoted herself to caring for him at home for several years. Eventually, after a period in hospital, the family began exploring residential aged care options. Like many families, the transition came with uncertainty and emotion, but from the moment Ann first walked into TriCare Ashgrove Aged Care Residence, she felt something different.

“As an artist, the first thing I noticed was how beautiful it was,” Ann shared. “The environment felt calm, welcoming and uplifting. It didn’t feel clinical, it felt warm and caring.”

That first impression quickly grew into trust. Ann recalls how warmly both she and Jerry were welcomed by the team, and how supported they felt during every step of the transition.

“The staff have always been wonderfully supportive,” she said. “They made us feel like family.”

For Jerry, what stood out most was the kindness and care shown by the team from day one.

“The nurses and carers are wonderful,” he said. “They made me feel welcome very quickly.”

Over time, the couple formed strong bonds not only with staff, but also with fellow residents and visiting families. Ann especially treasures the sense of community throughout the residence.

“I love coming here,” she said. “Of course I come to visit Jerry, but I also come to see other residents and the staff because I genuinely enjoy being here.”

Whether it’s sharing coffee with friends, swapping books with fellow residents, attending concerts and movie afternoons together, or simply enjoying quiet conversations, Ann and Jerry have embraced the lifestyle and connection that residential aged care can offer. One of their favourite traditions is attending movie afternoons together, which Ann lovingly calls their “date days.”

The couple also speaks warmly about the residence’s vibrant community atmosphere and engaging lifestyle program. From festive celebrations to musical performances, there is always something bringing residents together.

Ann fondly remembers one particular Christmas celebration where residents, staff and families all came together. “The carers were singing, dancing and dressed up in costume. Some of the residents also danced unexpectedly! There was so much joy and laughter,” she said. “It was wonderful seeing everyone having fun together.”

One of the things that has impressed Ann most is the genuine compassion shown by the care team every single day.

“You never feel like the staff are doing something because they have to,” she explained. “They truly care about the residents and about the families too.”

That compassion, combined with professional care and communication, has given Ann enormous peace of mind. She says the team always keeps her informed and involved, helping her feel reassured that Jerry is safe, comfortable and well cared for.

“I trust them completely,” she said. “I know Jerry is being cared for like family.”

For Ann and Jerry, the experience at TriCare Ashgrove Aged Care Residence has shown them that residential aged care can still be filled with friendship, laughter, dignity and purpose. Their story is a reminder that moving into residential aged care does not mean giving up the things that matter most. Connection, companionship and community can continue to flourish.

“Give it a go,” Jerry says warmly to others considering residential aged care. “Don’t be frightened of it. If you find a place where people genuinely care, it can become a wonderful community.”

Today, Ann and Jerry continue to enjoy life together at TriCare Ashgrove Aged Care Residence surrounded by caring staff, new friendships, meaningful moments and the comfort of knowing they are part of a supportive community.
