Every Tuesday and Friday afternoon you will hear the click clack of needles, interspersed with the chit chat of voices through the halls of TriCare James Ommaney Retirement Community.
It is here that 10 – 12 women meet on a regular basis to knit a variety of garments including beanies, mittens, jumpers and rugs for Brisbane’s needy.
Founders of ‘Knitting for Brisbane’s Needy’ Peter and Karen Croke, rely on people like the residents of TriCare James Ommaney to provide much needed warm clothing for Brisbane and beyond victims of domestic violence, homeless, hospitals, maternity wards and families fallen on hard times.
“We can’t thank the beautiful ladies at TriCare James Ommaney enough for the gorgeous knitwear they create and donate to us every year.
Everything they make is so well received, and appreciated, by those in need,” said Mrs Croke.
It’s a team effort by all the residents at the Village. People who can’t knit donate wool or money to buy wool, and family and friends of residents get involved as well.
TriCare James Ommaney resident, Val Rees, has been involved in the craft group for over six years and loves the feeling she gets from knitting for a cause.
“Everyone works at their own pace, and make what they feel comfortable making, whether it be beanies, mittens or squares for a rug.
We donate knitting items four times a year; in January we donated three garbage bags full of knitted items. It gives us all a great sense of accomplishment each time we send off our knitting,” said Mrs Rees.
The next ‘shipment’ is due to go on May 20, but not before the craft group holds an exhibition of their knitting on May 16 for TriCare James Ommaney residents.
