Volunteering provides valuable connections with community

In her professional life, and now in retirement, contributing to the broader community has always been important to TriCare Compton Gardens Retirement Community resident, Jill Powell.

Whether it be helping out with meals on wheels, assisting with the reading program at the local school or working with aged care residents, Mrs Powell has always taken an active role in helping where help is needed.

According to Volunteering Queensland, research demonstrates that volunteering leads to better health and volunteers over the age of 65 are more likely to receive physical and mental health benefits from their volunteer activities, along with a sense of personal accomplishment.

“Retirement doesn’t mean your life stops. To the contrary, be prepared for a whole new life to open up for you,” Mrs Powell says.

For the past three years, Mrs Powell has volunteered at Anam Cara Aged Care Community, part of Wesley Mission Queensland.

Working with the Diversional therapy team, Mrs Powell assists with their activity program. Her volunteer work is wide and varied from helping out on their regular bus trips, assisting with church services or simply visiting residents and keeping them company.

Having volunteered in aged care before, one of the most enjoyable aspects of volunteering for Mrs Powell is being part of a team and meeting new people.

“Volunteering fulfils my needs. I feel like I am doing something worthwhile, and what I give I get back in spades,” said Mrs Powell.

And she shows no signs of slowing down either.

“While I still have my independence and can drive my car, I will continue to help the local community in any way I can,” said Mrs Powell.
